Beginning next week, you may see engineering crews working not only along the streets of Manteo and in your neighborhood, but in grassy areas where manholes may be located as well. Green Engineering will be performing an asset and inventory assessment of the town’s sewer system by way of a $150,000.00 grant from the NC Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ). Safety vests, safety colored shirts and vehicles bearing the Green Engineering company name will make these crews easily identifiable while they are working in the community.
The Water and Sewer Department maintains and monitors the town’s utility services, including the sanitary sewer collection system and the wastewater treatment plant. However, by obtaining a grant for this project, it alleviates the potential burden on both the taxpayers and the overall town budget.
This project will entail assessing the sanitary sewer system manholes, pump stations, and other infrastructure located within the town limits. Manholes will be located, surveyed, assigned numbers, and global positioning system (GPS) coordinates will be generated for each one. This data will then be used to input into a geographic information system (GIS) database. This current technology will increase efficiency by reducing response times and make it that much easier to plan and prioritize future capital investments. During this time, please be mindful that there may be times when manholes are open, so please stay back from the crews to ensure the safety of everyone.
The town is very excited about this project and the roadmap it will provide to better prepare for sewer operations today and in the future. Managing these assets more efficiently will help minimize costs while delivering high quality service levels. Please call Town Hall at (252) 473-2133 if you have any questions.
